At the May bank holiday weekend, Earth+Sky Zen will host a Zazen Day on Saturday, May 4th, and a Sewing Day on Sunday, May 5th. This is an opportunity for people to learn about sewing a rakasu, or to continue to sew one that they have already started. Sewing a rakasu is one aspect of preparing to receive Jukai - also known as ‘becoming a bodhisattva’, and ‘taking the precepts’. The dharma talk on Saturday will outline the process in more detail.
Join us for a day of stillness at the Dublin Dojo, 6:30am to 6:30pm on Sunday, 24th March, to mark the Vernal Equinox 2024. It’s possible to join at breaks between zazens, but attendance for the whole day is encouraged. Breakfast and lunch is included. Suggested donation €25.

Roshi Kennedy will come to Ireland at the end of August for a sesshin with Grey Heron Sangha, and will spend the month of September with us at Earth + Sky.

The ‘season of mellow fruitfulness’ is almost here, the turning of the season from Summer to Autumn will happen this year on Wednesday September 22nd. It’s a good time to sit still for a while! In April of this year (2021) Alain Tai Nan, our first zen teacher, was installed as abbot of La Gendronnière, the mother temple of the Deshimaru Lineage in Europe. You can see some images of the event here.
Alain is wearing the bright red kolomo of an abbot and a kesa that belonged to Master Kodo Sawaki. It is a 25-band kesa sewn by the disciples of Kodo Sawaki for their teacher. The kesa was given to Alain by Kōshu Itabashi Zenji in Gotanjoji Temple, Japan, more than fifteen years ago.
A streamlined version of the annual Summer Sesshin will be held on Aran this year, from Saturday, July 31st to Saturday, August 7th. The venue is Killeany Lodge, Inishmore. See poster here for timetable and details. We are obliged to restrict the number of participants to 10. It is currently fully booked, but there is a cancellation list.
On Saturday, June 19, Earth + Sky Zen will host a Zazen Night on Zoom, starting at 8pm and ending at 6:30am on Sunday morning. We catch a few hours sleep at midnight. It’s an opportunity to appreciate the experience of the shortest (almost) night of the year!

The Redemptorists’ Retreat Centre in Esker, Athenry, has cancelled events for the next few weeks, due to the national effort to delay the spread of COVID-19. As such, the March sesshin will not take place as planned. Thank you to all who had booked and planned to travel.
The Dublin dojo will close from Saturday, March 14th until 7:00 am Wednesday morning, March 18th. We are conscious of participating in the national effort to delay the spread of COVID-19, and of taking prudent measures to avoid community transmission. At the moment the zazen timetable is unchanged, as the dojo is spacious enough to accommodate the group who practice morning and evening. We’ll keep the situation under review.
The annual zen retreat / sesshin will be held this year at Killeany Lodge, Inishmore, in the last week of July 2020.

A week long silent meditation retreat commemorating the Buddha’s enlightenment will be held in Esker Redemptorist Monastery, Athenry, Co. Galway from the 30th November to 7th December 2019.

Alain is currently teaching in France and leading sesshins in a few other countries. He lived in Ireland for over twenty years and introduced many people to zazen. He is one of the students of Master Deshimaru and received Dharma Transmission from Koshu Itabashi Zenji.

There will no be zazen on Sunday evening October 20th, or Tuesday morning October 22nd, due to a Zen Ceremony taking place on Monday. Otherwise, the schedule is as normal.
Please note that, as usual, there will be no zazen on Sunday, October 27th or Monday 28th due to the Bank Holiday
There will be a Zazen Day at Earth+Sky Dojo, Dublin on Sunday, September 29.
Starts at 11am and ends at 7:30pm.
Vegetarian and organic lunch provided.
Suggested donation €20, concession €15; no one should stay away for lack of funds.

There will be Zazen days in the Galway Zen Dojo on Sunday 22nd September and Sunday 20th October from 9am until 5pm. Come for all or part of the day.

Morning Zazen will continue as normal, for the summer.
There will be no evening zazen on Wednesdays and Sundays for the month of August or the first week of September.
The next evening zazen will be on Sunday, September 8, at 6:15pm, when the normal schedule will resume.
Our summer sesshin will be held from Saturday 3rd to Saturday 10th of August in Killeany Lodge, Inismore, Aran Islands, County Galway.
Cost: €300 (full week) €200 (preparation only - Sat-Wed) €150 (sesshin only - Wed-Sat).
There is dormitory-style accommodation. The food is vegetarian and mainly organic.
Arrival: before 7pm on 3rd August. Departure: after lunch on 10th August.

The next Mokudo Sesshin, organised by the ‘Zen Simply Sitting Network’ will be held at the Esker Redemptorists’ Monastery, in Athenry, Co. Galway in April 2019. Arrival on the evening of Thursday, April 25. Departure on Sunday April 28th after lunch.
The Mokudo Sesshin is held each year in honour of Taisen Deshimaru in a different country. We expect a number of practitioners from France, Spain, Germany, Hungary and the UK to attend.
